The reason why carnal mankind, not thinking wider than their visual field, tries to deny the existence of God and the eternal dwelling place of God, is because God, in physical terms, is invisible, untouchable and inaudible.  Hence, it is evident that He lives in another dimension.  A sphere we call “the spiritual world”.  A supernatural realm where spiritual beings called angels worship, praise and serve God, the Eternal Spirit.  Jn. 4:24 declares, “God is a Spirit, and those that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” And the writer of Heb. 12:22 confirmed: “You came unto…  the [spiritual] city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem…”

Heaven, or the heavenly Jerusalem, is nothing like the physical Jerusalem in Israel, but we can be certain that it exists, although it is as unseen as the wind, electricity, gravity, light-, micro- and sound waves; the world of atomic- and sub-atomic particles and micro organisms.  According to Rev. 21 this Jerusalem on the spiritual plane is a cubical city of “one thousand five hundred miles, built on foundations of precious stones with walls and a main street of pure, see-through gold.  And its twelve gates are enormous, solid pearls that will never have to be closed”.

This city is full of God’s glory and light; so day and night do not exist there.

Only God’s peace, holiness and righteousness reign in this wonderful place.  No tear is ever shed inside its gates of pearl.  Nobody ever becomes ill or lonely.  No one ever dies.  This is the wonderful place, which God calls “heaven;” His golden palace on a foundation of precious stones: Rev. 21:4.

We generally accept that heaven is a place high above us in outer space somewhere, as Jesus literally ascended into heaven through the clouds and we also expect Him to return through the clouds, and Scripture always refers to heaven as somewhere ‘up there’ in the spiritual world.  However, the existence of God’s spiritual world is completely incomprehensible to us, as we cannot see it nor touch it: Acts 1:9-11.  It is even possible that - partly, at least - the spiritual world of God exists parallel to our physical dimension, for after Jesus rose from the dead, He could appear ‘out of nowhere’ and walk through walls, yet He dined with His disciples: Lu. 24:36-46.

What we do know for certain, is that heaven is forever and everlasting life in the presence of God is for all time.

‘Forever’ means that time does not exist there.  The word ‘time’ is only used in relevance to our physical life in this dimension.  Watches and clocks exist only on this physical plane where they remind us of our short, temporal life.  The spiritual realm is not bound to time.  Accordingly, no one ever grows old in heaven and hell never ceases to torment the lost souls in its grasp: 1 Pet. 1:24-25.

Heaven is not an abstract place without form either.  There is a specific home or place for everyone.  A living space that will last for all eternity.  Jesus stated in Jn. 14:2-3: “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places (or homes)…”

According to the full context of Scripture, heaven is not a state of mind; heaven is not ‘within;’ heaven is a real place in the spiritual world.  (The Kingdom of God and not the Kingdom of Heaven, is ‘within’ sincere believers of the Lord Jesus Christ, according to Scripture.  Heaven and the Kingdom of God are two separate designations.  If you do not believe what the Bible teaches about heaven and the Kingdom of God in the full context of Scripture, and believe that heaven is ‘within,’ please read our discussion on the doctrines of Plato, and the spiritualisation of the entire Bible according to Swedenborg, Blake, and the Old Apostolic Church.]  Though invisible to our mortal eyes, heaven cannot be a mere state of mind.  By abstracting both heaven and hell to a mere state of mind, and applying this technique to nearly the whole of Scripture, these people twist the supernatural wonders of God’s Eternal Word, (like Jesus’ bodily resurrection and ascension,) into a worthless gospel.  Should we preach this strange gospel, we must also preach that God Himself is just an abstract state of mind, a feeling, or a fairy-tale-character of the Bible.  And if this were true, followers of that religious thought will actually be compelled to confess their religion as totally unnecessary.  For what can it benefit anyone to revere and serve a god which is a mere fixation of the imagination?
