EXACTLY WHAT DID CHRIST DO?

Only God Himself was competent to reverse the sad situation of humankinds fall in the garden of Eden.

No one else was worthy enough to become the atonement for humankind’s inexpressible blunder.  The sacrifices of the Ceremonial Law were only slaughtered as symbols of the perfect Lamb Who was to be slain at Calvary; thus they were powerless to redeem fallen humankind from their place of sin and -cursedness: Heb. 9:9-15.

In order to become this Sacrificial Lamb, God had to step onto humankind’s physical level.  Without laying down His divinity, He became flesh in this physical dimension.  As Jesus “so loved the whole world”, He chose to become a mere man, with the purpose of taking the place of all humankind at Calvary: Jn. 3:16; Col. 2:8-15.

Jesus came to reconcile humankind to God.  He came to make all of us acceptable again - holy enough to enter into the presence of the Most Holy God: Jn. 1:1-5.

To accomplish this, He had to deal with the cause of the division: humankind’s position of sin and -cursedness.  And so Jesus was born in Bethlehem, to bear upon Himself, [in His physical flesh], the separating sin-state of the entire human race.  John said in 1:29b: “Behold the [Ceremonial, sacrificial] Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the whole world.” And Titus wrote in 2:11: “For the grace of God, [Jesus], has come forward for the deliverance from sin and the eternal salvation for all mankind.”

Spiritual sin indwelt physical humankind and “became flesh”, therefore this had to be a war like none other: Rom. 5:12.  If Jesus had fought humankind’s sin, the essence of Satan, only on the spiritual level, it would have been unconquerable.  If it were fought on a mere physical level, it would have been a joke.  To conquer this deadly type of sin, Jesus had to fight sin in the spiritual-, as well as in the physical realms.  Therefore, the Lord Jesus did not expect any of His creatures to fight this battle.

“Jesus, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.  And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” - Phil. 2:6-8.

God the Father “begot” or made his Son Jesus a human being, and He used an ordinary young woman to bring His Son into this world.  Not to take over her whole existence as the devil did with Eve, but to redeem her and her entire human race from the unholy siege that occurred in Eden: Jn 1:14; Heb. 1:5; Jn. 3:16-18.

The main reason for Jesus’ incarnation and His ultimate humiliation was to recreate the relationship between fallen humankind and their holy God.

As a result, Jesus said in Jn 17:3: “This is life eternal, that they might [personally] know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom You have sent.”

One can only know another in a personal relationship.  The opposite, not to know God, is to live without a relationship with Him. “God will punish those who do not know or perceive or become acquainted with Him,” Paul declared in 2 Ths. 1:8, “and those who ignore Him and refuse to obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
